Why Did the Hawkins Choose to Replace Their uPVC Windows?

In May 2016, Sharon and John Hawkins reached out to us about upgrading the uPVC windows in their Kirk Langley home. Surrounded by traditional farmhouses and converted barns, their goal was simple: restore the property’s original charm using authentic hardwood joinery.

We were already well known in the area. The cottage next door had Gowercroft hardwood windows and doors installed around a decade earlier, and those still looked fantastic. The house to the left was having traditional stable doors fitted at the same time. Seeing the long-term durability of our work made it easy for the Hawkins to trust us with their own project.

How Did Gowercroft Restore the Property’s Traditional Character?

We worked closely with Sharon and John to fully understand their vision. They wanted to bring the house back to its original style, using timber joinery that felt true to the building. Together, we designed a full package that included spiral-balanced sliding sash, flush casement windows, and a glazed timber door with a custom top light.

Every element was made and installed by Gowercroft and protected by our 10-year no maintenance guarantee. We also completed all the internal trims for a polished finish throughout.

To personalise the entrance, Sharon chose to have the glazed top light above the front door sign-written with the name of their home. This small detail added a touch of charm and individuality.

Timber front door painted sage green with a sign-written glazed fanlight reading “Longford House”, installed with matching frame and polished brass ironmongery.

Were There Any Installation Challenges?

As part of our full fitting service, we carried out a thorough on-site survey. We take responsibility for final manufacturing sizes, ensuring every unit fits perfectly.

During the survey, we found that the rear windows had no lintels above them. Since we are a FENSA-registered installer, it’s our job to ensure compliance with building regulations, which state that windows must not carry structural loads.

We explained the issue clearly and suggested next steps. The Hawkins responded quickly by arranging for a builder to install new lintels. With that completed, we were able to finish the installation safely and with full certification.

“As I expected the windows and door look absolutely lovely and they have been much admired by everyone who has seen them. It was a bit of a blow when we had to have lintels in the back of the house but it was an ‘ill wind’, as they say, because the back of the house now looks so much better, with beautiful windows complimented by the stone lintels.”
— Sharon Hawkins

What Was the Final Outcome?

The new hardwood windows completely transformed the property. The result was a beautifully restored home with period-appropriate joinery that blended effortlessly into its rural surroundings.

“We are thoroughly pleased with the windows – they are a joy to behold especially when you consider what they have replaced.”
— John Hawkins
