In March 2012, we undertook our first exhibition at the Home Building and Renovating Show at the N.E.C. in Birmingham. At the show, we spoke to Mark Burton. He and his wife, Alexis, were looking to renovate a townhouse in Kensington, London to create a family home. The house had been badly neglected and would be a large project. Mark and Alexis had a strong vision and a desire to push it forward.
Our aspect of the job included four new sliding sash windows throughout the property, and also for the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke, hardwood lean-to conservatory on the side of the house.
At the initial site meeting, it was clear that subsidence had altered the overall structure of the building, and that work would be required to stabilise the property. Once this was completed, there was a need to alter some of the window openings and replace external render. This was to ensure that the sightlines on the windows of the property were clean and aligned. David, our Technical Director, worked closely with Mark and Alexis to draw up a schedule of window sizes that would require the least building work but give the most balanced appearance.
“I met Gowercroft at a trade show just as we were starting work on our house, which we had bought in a state of disrepair. David came to visit the house and I immediately knew I wanted them to be involved in the renovation project that lay ahead.” – Mark Burton
David worked to design a bespoke conservatory around the desired vision and limited space available at the side of the house. It was important to Mark and Alexis that it provide a secure, well lit extension to the existing living space. As such, the conservatory was designed to fit between the exterior wall of the property and a newly constructed brick wall on the edge of the adjoining property. This presented problems in terms of guttering and raising the apex to the necessary height without impeding on building regulations. These issues were overcome through the use of a structural gutter. This allowed the weight to be distributed to the new brick wall. All of the design was done collaboratively to ensure it was structurally sound and met Mark and Alexis’ vision.
“Gowercroft are a rare kind of business. They combine true passion for their product and its execution, with a personal touch often lacking in the building trade. Our sliding sash windows and bespoke conservatory are of the highest quality and finish, and went in on time with no fuss. I would highly recommend them.” – Mark Burton
