Updated August 2024 to reflect improved vacuum glass selection
The Richmond Heritage Flush Casement window is a revolutionary product, designed exclusively by Gowercroft Joinery. Already specified in several Grade II listed properties, including Winston Churchill’s former home, this window has been shortlisted for the Build It Awards – Best Windows category. It’s ideal for listed and period properties that require high-performance glazing with a truly slim-lined, traditional look.
When designing windows for heritage buildings, compromises are often made. Conservation officers want to preserve the building’s original character, while homeowners are looking for energy efficiency and minimal maintenance.
A common middle-ground solution is to use slim double glazing. Although this may seem to meet both aims, it often fails in practice. These units can break down quickly, resulting in condensation and reduced thermal performance. Ultimately, the homeowner doesn’t get the efficiency they expected, and the building loses its visual integrity.
We’ve encountered this dilemma many times. However, at Gowercroft, we refuse to offer a product we know won’t last. Instead of accepting this compromise, we created a better alternative.
The Richmond window combines traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Our team explored new technologies and materials to ensure performance and heritage compatibility.
The result is a flush casement window that delivers modern efficiency in a truly traditional format. It uses ultra-slim LandVac vacuum glazing, only 6.4mm thick, which outperforms most modern double glazing.
Elegant design: 18mm glazing bars with extended profiles to minimise visual bulk. Internal and external bars replicate traditional putty-pointed designs.
Traditional detailing: Period ironmongery including cockspur handles, casement stays, and butt-hinged operation.
Concealed gaskets: All seals are hidden, maintaining a clean heritage look inside and out.
Outstanding thermal performance: A typical 1480mm x 1230mm two-light window delivers a U-value below 1.40 W/m²K, surpassing Part L of Building Regulations.
Lasting insulation: LandVac’s flexible edge seal ensures consistent performance without gas leakage. This is supported by Historic Scotland’s thermal performance study, which demonstrates how slim double glazing units deteriorate over time.
True longevity: Backed by a 10-year, no-maintenance guarantee on all components. Also eligible for TimbaCare, our lifetime servicing programme.
Unmatched durability: Manufactured in Accoya®, a modified wood rated Class 1 for durability with a service life of 70+ years, verified by TRADA research.
