Heritage Range Shortlisted for Build It Awards 2017

Gowercroft’s Heritage Windows Shortlisted for Major Award

Updated August 2024: As part of our commitment to using the best available technology, our heritage windows now incorporate LandVac vacuum glazing. This upgrade enhances energy efficiency and durability while maintaining a traditional appearance. It builds on the success of our award-nominated Winston and Richmond heritage windows, offering outstanding performance in conservation and heritage projects.

Our heritage window range was shortlisted for the Build It Awards in the “Best Windows” category. Designed for listed and conservation properties, the Winston heritage sliding sash and Richmond heritage flush casement windows provide a true solution to the often conflicting priorities of appearance and energy performance.

These two pioneering windows deliver modern performance in a traditional form. Each has the slender lines, period details and authentic styling required by conservation officers, combined with the thermal performance and longevity desired by homeowners.

What makes these heritage windows different?

The Winston and Richmond windows were developed in response to a widespread problem: the use of slim double glazing in listed buildings. While intended as a compromise, slim units often degrade quickly, lose performance, and develop condensation that ruins the heritage aesthetic. You can read more about the problem with slim double glazing here.

Rather than compromise, our product development team sought a better solution. The result was a pair of innovative window designs that use:

  • Hand-finished Accoya® timber (certified for 70+ years of service life)

  • LandVac vacuum insulated glazing (6.4mm thick with ultra-high performance)

  • Patented SashSealer technology for Class 4 air permeability

  • High-performance microporous coatings formulated for durability

Together, these features allow us to deliver ultra-slim windows that meet and exceed the needs of both conservation officers and property owners.

What are the benefits of the Winston and Richmond heritage windows?

  • Aesthetics: Slender 18mm glazing bars with extended profiles, traditional ironmongery (fitch fasteners, cockspur handles, sash pulleys) and internal wet glazing for a truly heritage look

  • Energy efficiency: The Winston window (1230mm x 1480mm) delivers U-values below 1.35 W/m²K. The Richmond casement (1480mm x 1230mm) achieves U-values under 1.40 W/m²K

  • Reliability: LandVac’s edge-seal technology eliminates gas loss over time. Performance remains stable, unlike slim double glazing

  • Sustainability: Cradle-to-grave carbon neutral (thanks to FSC-certified Accoya) and fully recyclable at end-of-life

  • Low maintenance: Guaranteed for 10 years with no required upkeep. Optional lifetime coverage available via TimbaCare

Real-world recognition and usage

The Winston and Richmond windows have already been used in several prestigious Grade II listed buildings, including Winston Churchill’s former residence. Their authentic appearance and reliable performance are helping to transform the market for conservation windows.

This is not just about creating windows that “look right” on paper. These products are changing what’s possible for architects, specifiers and conservation officers. No longer is a compromise required between energy efficiency and traditional design.

Our heritage range is now multi-award-winning, including this Build It Awards shortlisting and a host of individual project accolades. You can read more about the Richmond flush casement and the Winston sliding sash window for full details.
