What is Red Grandis Timber?

Red Grandis is an Ethically Sourced timber of fantastic quality

Red Grandis is a sustainable, high-quality hardwood used extensively in our window and door ranges. Grown in responsibly managed plantations, it offers a rare combination of strength, consistency and ethical sourcing. At Gowercroft Joinery, it’s one of just two timbers we trust enough to build with.

Where does Red Grandis come from?

Although part of the eucalyptus family native to Australia, our Red Grandis is sourced exclusively from a single plantation in Uruguay. This plantation is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). That means it meets strict environmental and ethical standards—protecting both people and forests.

The trees are carefully spaced, pruned and grown to around 60 cm in diameter before being harvested at about 20 years old. This produces tall, straight trunks with minimal knots, making them ideal for engineered joinery.

What makes it ideal for joinery?

Red Grandis arrives at our workshop in pre-machined, engineered lengths. These are highly stable, reduce waste, and are quicker to process than rough-sawn timber. The result is a more precise, reliable product for everything from windows and entrance doors to folding and panoramic door systems.

The timber’s natural pale tone, with a soft rose hue, takes paint  well. It’s particularly suited to modern coatings, and we factory finish all products using a three-coat microporous paint system. You can read more about this process in our guide to why we only use specific coating types.

Why do we use Red Grandis?

Here’s why we’ve chosen Red Grandis as a core material across many of our timber ranges:

1. A long life with minimal maintenance
Our Red Grandis windows and doors last over 50 years with sensible upkeep. This makes it a strong, stable choice for long-term performance, even in exposed locations.

2. A superior paint finish
Thanks to the smooth surface and dense grain, the finish is exceptionally even. Paint adheres better and stays intact for longer, reducing the need for touch-ups. Learn more in our comparison of Accoya vs Red Grandis.

3. Ethically and sustainably grown
The FSC-certified plantation ensures that the entire operation meets environmental and labour standards. This includes safe working conditions, fair wages and long-term replanting plans. Our blog on sustainable timber choices explains more about how we select timber.

4. Designed for performance
Its engineered composition means Red Grandis is less likely to bow, twist or warp. That’s particularly important for larger frames, such as our bifold doors or panoramic lift and slide doors.

5. Climate positive
The timber can be grown in just 20 years, yet offers a 50-year-plus service life. That makes it a net absorber of carbon dioxide and a genuinely green material choice. Our life cycle assessments confirm that many of our Red Grandis products are carbon negative across their lifespan.

What can Red Grandis be used for?

We use Red Grandis in a wide variety of external joinery, including:

  • Flush casement windows and sliding sash windows

  • Entrance and stable doors

  • Bifold systems and French doors

  • Bespoke glazing solutions

Its long, straight lengths make it ideal for components that need strength and stability over wide spans. Our range of custom timber doors is a great example.

Are there any downsides?

The biggest consideration is that Red Grandis plantations have replaced previously wild land. While this impacts local biodiversity, they now play a role in preventing illegal logging by offering a regulated, well-paid alternative. This brings economic and social benefits to surrounding communities while still protecting forests elsewhere.

for external use. It holds its shape in large joinery items like door frames and is less prone to warping or bowing.

4. Outstanding finish
The timber machines beautifully and provides a flawless finish. Our Red Grandis products are factory spray-coated using a three-coat microporous paint system. This helps the finish stay smooth and even, without flaking or cracking.

5. Long-lasting quality
Because Red Grandis is hard and less likely to dent, it protects the coating layer. With sensible maintenance, our Red Grandis products can last 50 years or more. We even offer a 10-year no quibble guarantee, with the option to extend it indefinitely through our Timbacare programme.

What is Red Grandis used for?

We use Red Grandis across a range of bespoke timber products, including:

  • Casement and sliding sash windows

  • Entrance doors and door frames

  • Bi-folding doors and French doors

  • Timber screens and frames for large glazed areas

Its engineered length and stability make it particularly suited to large-scale external items.

Is there a downside?

The one drawback we acknowledge is that plantation land was cleared to make way for Red Grandis cultivation. However, these forests are now well-managed and play a role in protecting natural forest resources by offering local employment and reducing illegal logging.
